DESCRIPTION: Through hikers will
depart from Britton Peak and will hike up to Carlton Peak, where they
will be offered numerous views overlooking Lake Superior and the inland
bluffs. Hikers will descend from Carlton Peak to the Temperance River
gorge, where hikers will break for lunch and cool off in the river.
After lunch, hikers will hike down the east side of the river and
ascend back up the west side of the river. Hikers will continue
their ascent up the ridge and down to the Cross River, where they will
camp on the Cross River. The next day, through hikers will continue
hiking up the Cross River and over and down to the Fredenberg Creek,
and then back to Cook County Road 1. This a great through hike that
offers many overlooks and countless waterfalls on two rivers.

TETTEGOUCHE ST. PARK TO SILVER BAY
MILES: 11.1 miles hiked over two days
DIFFICULTY LEVEL: Difficult
DESCRIPTION: This is one of the more challenging
sections of the Superior Hiking Trail, with ups and downs, great views
of Lake Superior and inland bluffs. Through hikers will begin at
Tettegouche State Park. Backpackers will hike through dense maple
forests while ascending Raven Rock and Mt. Trudee. Hikers will get to
experience the famous "drain-pipe" ascent. Hikers will break on top Mt.
Trudee for lunch and view the three lakes in the valley below. Hikers
will continue hiking to Palisade Creek and set up camp for the night.
The Next day through hikers will hike to Bear and Bean Lakes, where
hikers will be offered great vistas and overlooks. Then the trail
ascends and descends down to the Silver Bay parking lot, offering many
overlooks of Silver Bay. This is one of the more challenging sections
of the Superior Hiking Trail, but also offers some of the best views.

CARIBOU TRAIL TO OBERG MT.

DESCRIPTION: Through hikers start
at Caribou Trail and hike up to White Sky overlook then descend to
beautiful Lake Agnus. Next hikers will ascend up to the ridgeline
overlooking the Poplar River valley and will stop for lunch. Next
hikers will descend down into the Poplar River valley and will hike
along the gentle Poplar River. After following the Poplar River down to
Lutsen Sky Resort hikers will set up camp for the night at the
multi-group campsite on the Poplar River. The next day hikers will
ascend Mystery Mt. and Moose Mt., where they will stop for lunch.
After lunch through hikers will descend Moose Mt. and cross Rollins
creek and then ascend Oberg Mt. (hikers will have the option of hiking
the loop on top of Oberg Mt.). The hike will end at the Oberg Mt.
parking lot.

COOK CT. RD. 1 TO MANITOU ST. PARK

DESCRIPTION:
Through
hikers start at Cook Ct. Rd. 1 and follow the gentle Two Island River.
Next through hikers will hike to Alfred's pond and stop for lunch on
the boardwalk-bog overlooking Alfred's Pond. After lunch hikers will
hike to Sugar Loaf Road and then into a mature birch forrest before
descending to the Caribour River (9 miles hiked first day). Through
hikers will camp over night at the multi-group campsite on the Caribou
River. The next day, hikers will ascend and descend into the Manitou
River Valley. Then hikers will stop for lunch on the Manitou River and
view some of the waterfalls of the Manitou River. This through hike
ends at the Crosby Manitou St. Park (8.1 miles hiked second day).
