2013 Mega Blizzard

  • Our first BIG snow storm of the season. I heard reports of 30 inches of new snow in the Two Harbor area, so like the crazy person I am, I decided to take a quick day trip up to Two Harbors. I have only been in one snow storm (the Halloween Blizzard of 1992) that dumped close to two feet of snow, so I was very excited to witness this blizzard first hand. The roads were horrible, as expected, with many vehicles in the ditch. The state patrol reported over 700 incidents. This is why I own a 4x4 truck.

  • I stopped at Jay Cooke State Park and took some images of the new swing bridge covered in snow. The snow was caked on everything.

  • I continued on my journey towards Duluth with the road conditions getting worse with each mile. The Duluth radio stations dubbed this snow storm “snowmageddon” and the “snowpocalypse” and for good reasons. I didn’t spend a lot of time in Duluth, just made one stop to shoot these bridges.

  • I was starting to lose precious daylight, so I decided to get up to Two Harbors. The snow was still coming down and the wind off Lake Superior created white out conditions. I finally got to Two Harbors and couldn’t believe my eyes, almost three feet of snow on the ground.

  • I waded in waist deep snow down to the harbor and took this image of the Edna G. tugboat. My face was wind burned and red from the driving snow.

  • I made it over to the Two Harbors lighthouse and got a few images of the lighthouse. It was starting to get dark, so I decided it was time to head back home. What an amazing storm, one that I will remember for a long time.
