2014 -32 Below Zero

When I first heard that the weather forecast was calling for temperatures near -30, I couldn’t believe it, and then decided we better go witness this first-hand. The weather people were calling this cold front the “Arctic Blast,” the “Polar Plunge,” and the “Siberian Express.”

We caught the sunset at Artist’s Point in Grand Marais. Yes, that is us all bundled up in our heavy winter wear.

The following morning I woke up to -32 with a wind chill of -63. It hasn’t been this cold for a long time. After getting my truck started, I drove up to Hollow Rock for sunrise. There wasn’t a great sunrise, but I really liked the moody blues of the water, sky, and the ice.

Yes, that is me in Lake Superior. don't worry i had chest waders on. in fact, the water temperature was 60 degrees warmer than the air temperature. I actually stayed warm in the water for an hour, and didn't get cold until I got out of the water.

After warming up a bit, I drove to Devil’s Track Lake and photographed the dog sledders participating in the Gitchegumee Express dog sled race. It was -28 with a windchill near -50.

After this image taken my camera couldn't take the cold anymore and quit. These dogs just love the outdoors.

On our way home we stopped at the Split Rock Lighthouse for a quick photograph.
